Google Algorithm in Search Engine Optimisation

The Google algorithm is something that everyone who is involved with SEO needs to have at least an acknowledgement of. PageRank is an algorithm used by Google that gives a weighting to all the parts of a hyperlinked document.

Google describes PageRank as:-
“PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B”

What does this mean in practice? Value the importance of links!

Not only the number, but the quality of the links to your site are of importance. 20 links from a site may have nowhere near the importance of just one link coming from a page with a higher page rank of its own. As an example, a link coming from, say the BBC News website, would be seen as having more importance than a link from a newly made personal blog site.

So, don’t only think about getting links from everywhere you possibly can, spare some time to consider where the link is coming from. Is it worth it? Is it from a well known site?
