Matt Cutts advice was to Avoid BO (Backlink Obsession) and to consider 2 main factors when sourcing backward links.
Firstly relevant content, not just odd comment about the subject.
Secondly Reputable, High PR (Page Ranks) and decent domain historys.
We have linked the video on the blog post.
We are also going to take some link building ideas from the SEObooks 101 ways to link build. Linked on the bottom blog post also.
1.) Try and give back to the community, like we are trying to achieve here as well as video blogs, blogs, PDF downloads.
2.) Create lists of myths and resources within the industry, They tend to go down pretty well.
3.) Social networks related to your industry and try and link bait to your target audience.
4.) Also try using PPC campaigns to hit your target audience to generate traffic and to encourage revisits from users within the industry.
5.) Consider various mediums when link building, Articles, Press Releases, Guest Blogging, online magazines, The list could be endless.
6.) Directories, quality over quantity.
7.) Selected social bookmarking sites.
8.) Write something topical and up to date with something in the news.
9.) Design your website to an extremely high standard to encourage designers to link automatically to you.
10.) Give away something cool, SEO tools ,Web Templates
