Copyright and Making Your Video Easy to Find
Google has launched Sitemaps for Video, an extension of their webmaster sitemaps program that will assist webmasters in having their videos indexed by Google.
To be indexed by Google there are certain things that Google expect to be in place. For example a video must comply with copyright standards ‘to respect the rights of artists and creators, and hope you will work with us to keep our community a creative, legal and positive experience for everyone, including artists and creators’. What I find hard to understand is the word ‘hope’ do they mean ‘desire’ or ‘trust that something is or may be the case’ or do they expect that all video makers will automatically comply. And how do you know when your video infringes copyright and who determines that this is so. The easy answer of course is to create a video that is completely original.
This would be easy to do if you are just creating a home movie or lets say an art project where you and mates want to fool about. No disrespect to art students I used to be one myself and we had ball doing this type of thing. The point I am trying make is that when you infringe copyright at corporate level it’s a different ballgame as many business have found out. There could be many reasons why this could happen. For example, you might add an audio track that belongs to record label without there permission or you might even add an image that you have seen that would be exactly right for your business campaign. The question remains do you own the rights to use. The golden rule is if something does not belong to you then you do not have the right to use it unless you get permission to use, which is right if you think about it. The only way to proceed with a creative video is use a professional service that has the knowledge and licence to promote your product.
