What Factors Have An Influence On Video Results In The Search Engines

How Search Engines Evaluate The Quality Of Online Videos

As video becomes a more and more popular medium online, many people want to know how they can get their videos to rank highly in the search engines.

Question and answer sessions released by Matt Cutts on his blog suggest that the principles are much the same as they are when it comes to getting standard articles and sites to rank highly.

What is important here is to distribute your videos to high quality channels and to ensure they are receiving high quality links. The case discussed by Matt Cutts in the video below illustrates this point perfectly. Great videos that have been distributed to channels such as YouTube can still slip under the radar of the major search engines if they are not receiving the right attention from other web users.

Videos stand a better chance of being ranked highly if you bear in mind that Google use many quite traditional measures to judge their quality. Links are important, especially links that help to indicate a good reputation and boost page ranking. Getting comments from a few really good sources, who themselves have high ranking sites and good reputations, can help no end, just as in standard search engine optimisation.

Further to this, Google’s primary purpose is to serve its users and to bring up the most appropriate results possible. Hence all the algorithm changes and updates which are implemented to make a quicker and more accurate search possible.

Videos will be indexed according to well they match with the topicality of search terms, there is no point indexing a great video that turns out to hold absolutely no relevance when people watch it.
So, if you’re looking to get a video ranked by the search engines, using traditional search engine optimisation techniques should help.

At the end of the day, the reputation of a particular page, which is established through its links and page rank, will always be an issue of vital importance. References:

SEO isn’t dead it’s evolving!

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation to give it it’s proper title isn’t dead, as the title of a recent Web Pro News video asks. Actually, SEO has just evolved. And it will continue evolving for as long as new and different interactive tools are developed.

Back in the dim and murky past, before Google existed, all you needed to do to get to the top position was put some meta tags in your <head> and write a short piece of copy with those keywords in and, hey presto, number one position.*

Then, along came Google, with their advanced algorithm and search became better for the searcher but harder for the sites to appear in top positions in the SERPs. What happened next? SEO evolved.

This is one example of SEO evolving - growing and changing from an unsophisticated activity towards the multi stranded beast it is today. You cannot optimise a site without using various methods, because of the ‘cat and mouse’ game that SEOs play with Google an the other search engines. I suspect the recent update, Caffeine, to Google will force many SEOs make changes to the way they work.

Web Pro News asked Heather Dougherty of Hitwise whether she believed that search engine optimisation was dead due to the growth in social media. Her answer was interesting because she highlighted the fact that social media can drive traffic towards a site, often more than some search engines. This tells me that Social Media, such as Twitter and Facebook will play a bigger role in search engine optimisation, but certainly won’t kill it.

Some ‘non-techy’ people have only just got used to using Google, as opposed to the Yellow Pages to find services such as plumbers, electricians and builders, as well as to buy things online or find a company telephone number or physical address. Why on earth would the non-techy web users want to change their search habits? With this in mind, I don’t see search disappearing anytime soon, therefore SEO will stick around too.

Social Media is a great tool for connecting with people, to spread the word about your company, your products and services as well as to connect with people on a personal level. SEOs are just taking advantage of a tool that is available to them. While the tools of SEO evolve, so will SEO. It will never stand still, but become more and more sophisticated every day.

*OK, I’m over simplifying here, but you get my point…

How do you see SEO evolving in the future?

Do you use Social Media to drive traffic to your site? How effective is it?

The Usefulness Of Informative Content On Twitter For Search Engine Optimisation.

Importance Of Relevant Content For Networking And Search Engine Optimisation

It seems you can’t read a blog post or technology article these days, without being exposed to something related to social networking, usually featuring Twitter.

So how useful is Twitter as an Search Engine Optimisation, social networking and content writing tool, and how important is useful, informative content?

The main benefit of using a site such as Twitter is to network with competitors, industry members and potential customers. Communication between a business and their ‘followers’ is important as it allows them to build their brand and connect with other industry members.

There is no denying that Twitter has the capabilities to allow companies, such as The Creare group, to build up their brand and portray it in a way that suits their business, products, services, customers and values.

For this reason it is important to include relevant text and keywords in posts, rather than writing useless tweets about your day.

However, Twitter can be used on a much more personal level, adding a voice to a brand, and so it is important to write in a way that will appeal to your ‘followers’.

Again, it is essential that informative content is utilised in social networking websites such as Twitter, in order for a company to be portrayed as an authority in their industry. By providing relevant content, connecting and communicating with relevant users, a business can be portrayed to their potential customers as an authority. For this to happen it is essential that these businesses write relevant content related to their sector.

Twitter currently implements a real term search, as opposed to Google where Internet users have to wait for the search engine to index their content before it appears.

This means that if a Twitter user writes a comment about a particular subject, such as web design, and they include the term in their post, it will immediately be listed in Twitter’s search facility.

Again, this stresses the importance of writing relevant content in posts on social networking websites such as Twitter.

From an Search Engine Optimisation point of view, Twitter is relatively useful, by including links as part of a feed it can increase the traffic to websites and it allows businesses to connect with those people that they regard as important.
